Last Friday I posted about my rustic Christmas tablescape and mentioned there were a ton of DIY’s hidden throughout my post. Today I want to share my DIY $1 store chalkboard plates. Obviously these aren’t the type of plates your going to eat your Christmas dinner off of, but they sure are purdy, aren’t they!?

My Supplies:
Silver trays – found at my local $1 store
Chalkboard craft paint – found at Michaels
Sponge paint brush – found at Michael’s

Before I started this project, I was worried how the chalkboard paint would react on the silver tray. Normally I use spray paint on projects like these so I don’t have to worry about streaks, but since I needed to paint in a circle, I figured painting by hand would work better than attempting to tape off a circle shape. I was pleasantly surprised when I started applying the chalkboard paint. There were NO streaks! The sponge brush probably also helped with the smooth finish.

I applied one coat of paint, waited about 30 minutes and applied a second coat. Now I will admit, before they fully dried, they looked really “streaky” and glossy.  But don’t worry my friends, once the paint dried, the final product was just as I hoped.

In order to get the chalky matte finish I wanted, I decided to “season” the chalkboard. Basically that just means I crumbled up some chalk dust and rubbed it onto the chalkboard. This gave the plate a more “used” look. Once the chalkboard was seasoned, I then wrote on the plates with my chalk. After a few added accessories and a little bit of styling, I was all done!
